DCC Tools

DCC Tools

I havent had much need to work on DCC tools in recent times but in the past I used to create a lot of tools specifically for 3DS Max and Cinema4D during my time at AO.com. I did this to improve the workflow and maximize efficiency with the tools I did use.

3DS Max - Cinema 4D Bridge

This tools purpose was to facilitate the export of assets from 3DS Max - The content creation software my team used, and Cinema 4D, where the videos were compiled, animated and rendered.

This was done by using a UI that could scale to your assets needs and requirements. I.e. How many doors or dials does your asset have. Then setting the relevant information, that asset would be cleaned, exported and imported in to Cinema 4D where any animation set up would be autocompleted for you.
This tool was designed to remove the tedium from the job, you still of course required clean set up from an art side.

The unique thing about this tool is that the UI was written in PySide and was DCC agnostic so it could in theory be used in any application so as the relevant back end was created.

3DS Max - Screw creator

One of the first tools I created at AO was a simple tool to place screws at a selected face. This tool saved a lot of time whilst creating assets.
Many assets have screw heads showing and in the past the process was to either open an older file and take screws from there, if you can find them or open a file in an obscure location.

This tool packaged a set of screws and a UI tool to select a screw head based off of a simple image for Torx, Phillips head. Pozi screws, etc... and place them where needed.

3DS Max - Bridge Edges

When I first started using 3DS Max one of the things that immediately bothered me was the bridge edges tool. It couldn't be bound to a button, it didn't bridge multiple edges and didn't have multi functionality. I.e. you couldn't select two, or more  opposing edges and bridge them or interactively bridge edges very easily at the press  of a key. I created a tool that completely re-worked the way bridge edges worked to work a lot more like Mayas bridge edges tool which I much prefered at the time. This became one of the most popular tools I created at AO and was used widely by the team.

3DS Max - Clean Export

A precursor to the Cinema 4D / 3DS Max bridge was the clean exporter. This aided the user in ensuring their naming conventions were correct, checking pivots and running general mesh cleanup operations to improve exporting success and provide generally cleaner models that would be used in future.
